Estonia: ChatGPT in Schools

In Estonia, they’ve decided to officially introduce ChatGPT in high schools, with minors aged 15 and 16 using it directly. For the first time, an entire nation is entrusting such powerful technology to such young students. The stated goal is clear: to support teachers, streamline school organization, and boost students’ digital skills.

But there are delicate issues we can’t ignore. For example, there’s the real risk of creating a generation that becomes dependent on AI—unable to think critically or solve problems without machine assistance. And are we sure they’re ready to handle this change without losing classroom authority?

Perhaps the true challenge lies in finding the right balance between advancing innovation and upholding the educational values that make school more than just a simple transfer of information.
